Welcome to Horizon Academy

Dear Friend,

Welcome to Horizon Academy, a specialized program to educate students with learning disabilities. Horizon Academy's goal is to help students with basic skills and to learn strategies so that they can successfully return to a traditional school.  The student body is coeducational and serving students from first grade through high school.  It is my pleasure to introduce you to this special learning community that has been in operation since 1999.

Horizon Academy serves students from a fifty-mile radius in the Kansas City area.  Students are funded privately either by parents or by local school districts.  Since Horizon Academy holds accreditation in both the states of Kansas and Missouri, parents can request placement from their public school if their child is not receiving an adequate education in the special education program in their home school district.

The curriculum for the students is driven by each child's Individual Educational Plan.  The major focus is on basic skills and strategies to become an effective, efficient learner.  The basic curriculum at Horizon Academy is reading, spelling, math, written expression, middle school content classes, credit high school classes, social skills training, technology training, P.E., art, music, cooking and drama. The school utilizes a daily diagnostic approach so that each child is carefully observed and assessed daily. In addition, the learning of the strategies becomes a part of each student's thinking process that helps them in all they do.

Whether you are a parent, educator or other interested person in our program, I thank you for visiting our website.  I also encourage you to visit our school during one of our Community Visitation Days held each month to see the school in full operation or click here to view a video of our school. If you like what you see and are interested in helping our school continue to grow and meet the needs of these special students, please visit our online giving page.

Best regards,

Ms. Sharyl Kennedy
