Horizon Academy is a nonprofit, 501 (c) 3 tax-exempt organization, with a mission to provide a caring and respectful environment for children struggling with learning disabilities, where they are given the opportunity to achieve their highest potential, become life-long learners and develop into productive, responsible citizens of their community. The overall goal of our program is to provide our students with the skills they need to be successful in academics and social skills and then transition them back to a traditional school setting.
Horizon Academy remains to be the only program of its kind in the Kansas City area and is dedicated to providing intensive care in an educational environment where children with learning disabilities from first grade through high school can experience academic success. Since its founding in 1999, Horizon Academy has grown from 12 to 81 students, graduating 145 children back to traditional schools. The vast majority of these students return to their traditional schools as independent learners with overall good grades, greater class participation, increased self-confidence and self-esteem, and improved social skills.
With an estimated 70,000 learning disabled students in Greater Kansas City's public schools, we know that many of them would benefit greatly from the individualized education plan and specialized programs that Horizon Academy has to offer.
One of the greatest challenges Horizon Academy faces today is achieving and sustaining new levels of support. We receive no monies from state, federal or religious institutions. We rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations and private foundations to provide approximately 20 percent of our operating budget, which is used to keep our doors open and staff classes. This makes up our Annual Fund.
